Weekends!

Yup, weekends. Since i've finally started work, weekends are starting to mean something to me again! hahaha. can't wait to be off crutches though. Tried putting my full weight on my right leg for like one or two steps and it was alright. Just hurt a little more than usual after that though, so I guess to go w/o crutches next week is still kinda impossible.

Arghs I'm so craving some fic to read now. But i've re-read quite a lot of my favs already so...

Meh. I really should finish up the review. Maybe i ought to do that now... ah wells... just feeling... lazy and reluctant though. Work has been alright so far. been reading and reading. and will be till i can start on lab proper. Did some data entry work as well, and I must say that i have a pretty good grasp of the big picture of this whole waste management/water treatment she-bang, considering that i knew absolutely NOTHING when i went to work on Monday. Yes, I was lazy and didn’t read up during my long 'holiday'. But even then i had no idea where to start reading from, and can't read papers since i don't have a university account to 'leech' onto and access all the journal papers. But yup i do now. Which on its own is a huge improvement from my previous work place. How do you do research if you can't even read journal papers because you have no access? Seriously, you just can't. Am about... 1/3 or 1/4 of the way through the stack of lecture notes. Not started reading the standard methods yet, which is very important too. Signed both my NDAs already, though right now I don't know anything to disclose but well... NDA or not, I'm always (intentionally) vague so asking me to not disclose anything isnt a huge challenge for me. Not like anyone else that I know outside of work can understand me anyway. I just need to say differential equations, 1st order reactions etc and my sis goes 'wtf....enough!' so yeah. And gosh, speaking of all that math, I seriously don't get any of those equations stuff. My math really, really suck. Never quite got those in chem last time and its coming back to hunt me now :( But I'm glad that this job is multidiscipined. There bio, and there's loads of chem too. And I love the chem. Minus all the math bits that is... which is... sigh... :( Still... stuff like GC (gas chromatography) and all the names of short chain fatty acids... yeah, I'm familiar with those, just that tbh I'd prefer the IUPAC name over the common name. What caproic acid? I'd understand better if you just tell me hexanoic acid but whatever, now that i've understood that it’s the same thing it no longer matters. Or like iso-caproic. Yup, I remember from my out of curriculum readings last time what the iso means so I'm fine. Yeah, chemistry was my first love after all. and still is i guess, though i must say I'm really not very good at it, owing to my pathetic mathematical abilities...

But yup, this job promises to be really fun. Fun in the scientific way. I will really get to do RESEARCH, and I'm learning loads of new stuff everyday. As opposed to the previous job when my boss sucks so bad that i had to teach her how to do science. Pathetic. Pffft.

Oh and did I tell you? I've got a nice table/cubicle all to myself. And my own desktop. They have macs too, I wonder if i can request to get a mac instead... cos i heard the lab manager saying something about them having macs returned to them from another cluster or something. I'd very much prefer a mac, then i can happily use my typinator and alfred there since I've paid for those already. And i've got a TON of other useful (and not that often used) programs on my own lappy too. And oh I was issued a thumbdrive too. 32GB. Wonderful! Now I don't have to buy another just to use for work. All in all, a happy, happy place. Ah and everyone leaves the office freaking on time. Like 5:45pm from mon to thurs, and ppl actually do leave the office around that time. and its 5.15pm on fridays. On thurs at like 5:50pm my boss came and ask like 'why aren't you going home yet?' lol. That on time! I explained that I was waiting for my sis to come fetch me :P. Well of course, and my boss has already said on my first day, they do have to work overtime if experiments need to be carried out. And the way he said it was that it happens pretty often. I guess if the work needs to be done it can't be helped. In either case I don't think i'll have to stay to crazy hours like the 11+pm or 12+pm I did last time. Oh and the experiments need to be taken care of every 3 days or something, regardless of whether it’s a public holiday or a weekend, and they take turns coming back to do it so yeah. You dictate the experiments but the experiments dictate you. That's how i've always seen it as. And it’s a nice relationship IMO. Again few people would like that but I'm one of the few... it'll be a while before i can get put in the roster though, since i need to learn the techniques and everything first. And this project apparently ends in June. Which is... really, really soon. But then I'm part of another project as well so after June i'll be full time on another project. Still have absolutely zero idea what the other project is about. But whatever, i'll learn and cross the bridge when i come to it. I wonder if i can start walking the week after next... hmm...
