Meh...
Talking with arashianelf over school work brings back memories of my old school days. It's been so long I wrote any argumentative essay... or any formal writing in general. It's funny how I have so many examples to list now when I had none last time. Though only because the topic on hand is related to all the Time Techland articles that I read almost religiously...
Again I'm reminded on how different people from different worlds can be...
Like doing FISH today... you know the other party has never done molecular bio work by how she handles the pipettes and stuff...
Well anyway... on a slightly different note.
I stayed up last night to watch Apple's keynote.
I didn't post about it here but previously Samsung's S6 release... Well I didn't look into really a lot of details but... Well of course I'm an Apple fan but... really, in all honesty, I think the move to copy Apple THAT much, even to the extend of removing the microSD card slot? That's really not going to help Samsung win sales. Especially the microSD card removal?!??! One of the big reasons why my dad made the switch to a Note 4 was the microSD slot. That and the S Pen, and that he wanted to try and play around with both systems. It's one of the features that Android users are proud about (though whether they actually switch microSD cards on a regular basis is a different thing) but they removed it? And copied Apple so much? Really is there a point? I don't think Samsung will ever be able to win Apple in terms of the 'upscaleness'. They lost great market share last year because Apple invaded China really successfully on the high price-range end, and on the low price point much of their share has been eaten by China's homegrown brands like Huawei and Xiaomi. So well... because they can't compete on the low price range Samsung has decided to compete on the high price points this time... but I don't think that will work out well for Samsung...? Those Apple fans will stay Apple fans. Apple has succeeded in building a great ecosystem, with high barriers to leaving. They are probably trying to win over those sitting on the fence... by giving them a familiar interface and all. But those sitting on the fence can be as quickly lost as they are gained. On the other hand those in the middle ground but currently on the Android side may not see the point getting the S6 if they want an Android experience. Why go for an Apple look alike when you can just get the real thing? It's like... a counterfeit? Only that it costs about as much as the real thing? This Apple following yet bashing thing... I really think it's not gonna get them far with Apple upping it's game in China, and the Chinese companies rising up really fast. It's not just Apple they have to content with now. There are other new players in the smartphone market now.
One of Samsung's weakness is that it's running Android. Not that it's a bad thing, really... but then the fact that there are so many other phones, brands running Android...? It means that the barriers to entry and leaving are low. You can easily switch from a Samsung Android phone, to a Huawei, a LG, a HTC, or even the Xiaomi (it runs a simplified version of Android but it still has the Google Playstore despite what I read elsewhere - source: I own one). So that's part of the reason why Samsung's market share dropped so rapidly as well. Customers switched to cheaper alternatives, and easily so. And that is the reason why Samsung has been toying with their own OS, a OS that'll work with any household device and drive the Internet of Things. The Tizen. So far they have had one smartphone running Tizen... and well their smartwatches run Tizen too. I don't think their Tizen push will really work though. Not with Google and Apple around...
I'd really like to see Samsung differentiate itself... as they did successfully with the big screens.
Well on to Apple... I'm getting sleepy so let me make it quick lol!
Watching their keynote again reinforces the notion that they are in a world of their own. The new lappy... the engineering designs put into it... the Research Kit... which will be open source. Research kit. Seriously. I'm a researcher so I know how big being able to collect all that data, so much data, so detailed, so comprehensive. Really it's a HUGE thing. And there is so much more possibilities beyond that 5 apps they have at the moment. It's a HUGE thing. And really... that's something that Samsung would never have done. Google? Maybe...? But it was Apple who came up with it anyway. I'm definitely excited to see what this could bring to the future.
The Apple watch too. Apple did a great job with the design. The digital crown is like an 'ahah' moment... taking something right in front of you and changing it into something really really useful. The force presses sounds good too, and that same technology will also be in the new lappy trackpads. I'm definitely looking forward to trying and see how that works.
Well the Apple watch. Singapore is not in the 'first release' countries! Japan is there, and so is Hong Kong... and so is China! Well we've known for a while that Apple has been trying to court China. From their improvements to the Chinese language input system... to adding weibo and other Chinese social media sites support to the OS and iOS... and now giving them first release for the Apple watch. You also can't miss the fact that when showing off the apps on the Apple watch, the wechat app was shown too. Ooo and the new macbook. Space grey, silver and GOLD. Meh. I'm still waiting for the day Sg gets an Apple store though...
But yeah, it's no secret. Apple is attacking the Chinese market aggressively, and their last quarter iPhone sales shows that they have been very successful indeed.
The watch though... I think they will be able to change things. Especially with the release in China... I think they'll see sales in the first week, if not the first month, that rivals ALL smart watch sales in 2014. I'm still waiting to see what developers can do with the device though. What will be the killer app, that'll make smart watches more and more common, and eventually a necessity in developed countries/places. I do have high hopes that Apple will kick start this category.
Gah. Checked the app store and Vainglory has yet another new update and new character. GAH. Why did my 5s die? I really can't wait now... to get a new phone. I WANNA PLAY! Definitely need a new lappy/desktop too.... Gah!
