So this smart alec... happily came home early in order to 1) avoid getting scolded by my mum, and 2) cook dinner. But what did i do? I FORGOT TO BRING MY HOUSE KEYS! Smart right? I know you're totally awed by my awesomeness... So yeah, my sis was at home already - she finished her chem paper - but of course, she was taking a nap. So I ended up calling her phone, the home phone, pressing the doorbell a million times... I gave up after a while but she did wake up and open the door for me. The first thing she said was 'you an idiot'... and i totally agree... cos not only does she have her math A levels tmr, she's also sick and needs her rest, and there i was waking her up cos i forgot my keys T.T
I did do a bit of shopping just now though, got myself the vanilla coke lipbalm which i misplaced (2nd time i lost my lipbalm T.T) and got a Fanta orange flavoured one for my sis. I hope she likes the flavour... Somehow i've fallen in love with collecting lipblams of various different flavours... :S Got myself two tubes of handcream as well since there was some 2 for 5 bucks offer. Washing dishes is makes your hands pretty dry so as much as i use to really hate creams of any sort, hand creams are a must after washing the dishes... guess you could consider that part of me becoming more... ladylike? or just taking care of myself a wee bit? Idk.
Hmm so my dad's comp. I have a lot of things to install... of utmost importance would be to first update the OS, then install Office and the Adobe suite (photoshop and more). Then there's all the small things that i use like teleport, alfred etc etc. Oh, then i have to put back the photo library that i backed up last time... and another huge problem is that cos i put my name when sending the mac book for repairs... they put my name when they set up the new disk and now... i gotta make another user for my dad or something since i don't think they let you change usernames... :X bleah. Loads of trouble. And i don't feel like doing it now... >< Now i wished i hadn't insisted on watching last week's AnShi before leaving the house... I'd very much like to watch something now, but alas its only Tuesday... ahhhhhhhhhh
A while back my mum's friend asked me to help with her nexbook. Its an older model that runs wat... honeycomb? So i tried software updates, no updates. And if i wanted to update it to say ICS I'd have to root the device and what not... no thanks, I'm sadly a NOT a real geek... only a pretend geek. I don't even know how to root the device and what not. So i installed andriod market and google playstore, neither worked. Turns out that i needed some google services framework... installed that, but now i couldn’t sign in from the playstore! Searched around, tried to sign in using the gmail app, didn’t work either. Tried to sign in from youtube app, that FINALLY worked. But now... it says that it cannot connect to the store! I gave up after that... Now she want the tablet back and meh... it feels real sucky not to have done anything useful at all... sighz. I'd never realise that getting the google playstore to work on an older version of andriod would be so freaking hard. Most webs i see suggest a factory restore but i don't think I'd do that since its not my tablet... kinda extreme and i don't know if she had anything important there.
It did make me feel really grateful that my dad got me an iphone though. That time was... 2 and a half years back? It was in the absolute spur of the moment... i was using sony ericson then and looking for a new candybar phone (stick, with PHYSICAL number pads, no flip phones for me), but most of the phones on the market at that time where starting to go touch screen, or at least partial touch screen. Touch screens with the exception of apple's were still pretty rudimentary at that time though, so i heard a lot of complains against it and didn’t want one... in the end i was thinking of getting an SE phone with partial touchscreen but... the touchscreen wasn’t very good and on the spur of the moment, like literally when our number was called (it was at the IT show and really crowded, so you had to get a number and wait) when my dad suggested that i get an iphone instead... and so i did. And i totally had no clue how to work that damn thing at first... i didn’t even know how to turn off the screen. Dumb right? My sis was totally scolding me, saying that she at least knew where the off button was... but i didn’t know... I just left to screen on cos i figured it auto turns itself off after a while. Not that i knew how to turn it off till my sis told me much later anyway. And i was so pissed at the start, cos a million people were SMSing me and the telco ppl had kindly transferred my old SIM card over the the iphone... BUT the thing was that i had no clue who was sending me the messages since my contacts book was empty. o.O And I couldn’t figure out where/how to take out the SIM card... had to ask a sales person selling apple accessories how to get the SIM card out... and the answer was that i needed a pin or something sharp to poke the tray out :X I remember i got some SE program to DL all my phone numbers to my computer, and then i probably typed it all into my phone manually... but that was about it. I don't remember having trouble with anything else after the very first day. I was glad i had a debit card cos i needed it to set up my itunes account... and i had to DL itunes to get my songs into my phone... but everything was a breeze. DLing all that apps and games that I'd possibly ever need/play, putting almost ALL my songs into my phone (that was an absolute first, before my phones only had like... 256 kb of storage or something? minuscule really), transferring photos from the phone to the computer had to be done manually, but everything else was settled by itunes. Very very user friendly and intuitive (once i figured out the off button at the top of the phone i guess XD). And the touchscreen was fabulous. Especially in contrast to my dad's HTC touch pro 2... the iphone was just magical. And the windows VS iOS... espcially later on when windows... 6 i think? It kept making my dad's phone hang, crash, killed the micro SD twice... loads of bugs... That's why my dad's using an iphone 4s now... though there are loads of things that he loves about andriod and samsung (the BIG screens in particular, are a huge draw when your eye sight is getting poor). But anyway, 2 and a half years ago... that was when i got drawn into the apple fanclub/ecosystem (though i'm not a very crazy apple fan). And from there on, i got a mac. Then my dad got an iphone, and a mac, and an ipad... And it all started when my dad asked if i wanted to get an iphone... I'm glad though. My phone is getting slow, but its still... it feels as good as new. Sometimes it gets cranky and takes really long to say, save a photo or open a the messages, but for the most part its fine and I'm loving it. That's why even as much as I'd love to 'keep up with the technology', it’s also a bit of a waste to change phones... maybe i'll just wait for iphone 5s or 6? Idk...
Mac took me much longer to get use to though. The change is a lot more drastic... like not having a task bar to click and switch between different windows from the same application. I used to use 3 different windows on firefox everytime. One for facebook (sounding the horns in mousehunt only, i don't stalk ppl on FB and all that. Honest! Even now its still a hot and cold thing for me and social networking), one for asiasoft forums, one for other stuff (like emails, school websites, proper work). Nowadays i end up only using a single window in firefox, since i find it not that convient to switch windows. I really miss the hotspots everytime i switch to XP (for gaming) though.
Back to the honeycomb tablet... I'm really glad i got into the apple ecosystem rather than andriod, cos the fragmentation of the andriod devices is a HUGE problem IMO. (Not to mention the ease of use, fewer apps and all that). See my mum's galaxy S2 was still running like gingerbread till i update it to ICS a few months back. But at that time, jellybean had been out for a while already. So far still no updates for jellybean i think? In comparison, my 2 and a half year old 3gs got iOS 4 within the first few hours the iOS was out... i got iOS 5 within the day, and i got iOS6 within the day as well. Yes, i stayed up waiting for the iOS to be released and updated my phone and all, but with the andriod (unless u buy a nexus), you CANNOT update to the new software even if you want to (short of rooting your device and installing the new OS yourself, but if I'm not comfortable with doing that, i can garentee you many more aren't either). For some semi-tech savy person like me, that's very important. Yeah i don't get all the new perks of the OS like i got get Siri and panorama shots and all, but i still get quite a lot of the new features that's really useful (like folders from way back in iOS 4 and many more)... also makes you feel that you're remember and not left out, yes even though you're using a really old phone and Apple would so love it if you would buy a new iDevice. Also since iOS 4 Apple's been letting users update their iOS for free, so there's no monetary issues there. The Samsung note 2 looks like a great device, and I'd gladly take it if you give one to me free. But if you say you'll give me an andriod device in exchange for my iphone, I'd have to say no. Its not just the fact that while so many ppl love HUGE screens but i prefer something i can use easily with one hand AND can fit nicely into my jeans pocket, its not just OS updating problem, (and with the new devices they'll be running jelly bean so the OS is not a problem either)... its that i've gotten hooked onto apple's ecosystem already. I've spent tons of money buying apps (yes, i actually don't jailbreak my phone, so all my apps are actually bought through the appstore, free or otherwise). I don't keep track of how much i spent, and most of the time the apps are the cheap, 1 USD or 2 USD kind, but i did paid for quite a lot of them, and over the course of two years that adds up... yeah quite a lot of apps were downloaded on sale (i.e. free) but considering that i've downloaded and tried a few thousand apps, plus there's those in-app-purchases... you gotta give me some EXTREMELY good reason to switch. Yeah some apps are free in andriod but i had to pay to get them on my iphone, but the free andriod version comes with ads... and some of the apps i'll still have to 're-buy' anyway. Also, the ease of use is really a huge plus. With iOS 5 and 6, i really don't need to give a shit about backing up my phone. Photos auto goes into icloud, which eventually goes into iphoto on my mac when i open the app. App data is backed up every night when i charge my phone. Now that baby can even sync with my iTunes when its charging from the mains on my bed... i don't even need to plug it into my computer anymore (though i still do, when i like my phone to me around me AND it needs charging, but that's just cos i don't have a main power point close enough). Can andriod do that? I know my mum syncs her contacts with google/gmail. The rest... i really don't know. Not heard of it, though to be honest i've not read up too much about andriod. It certainly has its good points, but for me apple has been successful in creating a high switching cost... at this very moment, its pretty much 'no way' to ask me to switch to andriod. Playing with a 2nd andriod phone/phablet/tablet i don't mind, but completely switching over seems impossible for me right now. For now at least, I'm glad i got absorbed into the apple ecosystem though.
Sighz okays, i could go on forever about this... I'd better stop here now.
And yes, it seems like i've been updating my LJ a lot recently, sorry to my friends about that!
